The G7 Bologna Environment Minister’s Meeting held two years ago in Bologna acknowledged the fragility of the African continent vis-a-vis climate change and therefore welcomed the initiative of the Italian government to open a Africa Centre for Climate and Sustainable Development in Rome. To implement the decision of the G7, the Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea has concluded a tripartite agreement with FAO and UNDP to establish and run the Centre.

The Centre aims at increasing effectiveness, synergies and complementarity of the ongoing initiatives in support of Africa, and at the same time creating an instrument to better understand, through a continuous dialogue, needs and priorities of our African partners. The Centre is governed by an Advisory Board composed of 8 African ministers invited to assure adequate representation of the different realities (also linguistic) of the African continent.

The Centre has already gathered the interest of many economic realities and has already been tasked with the implementation of projects in some African countries. For instance, a project for the improvement of the energy sources of a hospital in Swaziland, the replacement of 60 water pumps from diesel to solar power in Ethiopia.
